Awards

ASME was awarded the Crimson Star Award from the Coordinating Council of Student Organizations in 2008. This is the highest level of excellence that a student organization at the Capstone can receive from the CCSO.

Bianca Covington has received the Will Byington Award for oustanding officer in a UA student organization.

ASME received the Caritas Award, which will provide a sum of money for outreach to the community.

The 2008 Southeast District F SPDC was held in Tallahassee, FL, April 4-6, 2008.

  • Chris Elm won first place in the Old Guard Web Poster Competition
  • Michael Sealy won third place in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competiton
  • UA placed first in the Student Sections Competition, with a perfect score of 1000.
  • UA received an award for the most students in attendence at the SPDC.
  • UA also received the Kilometer Award (within the district) for the most student-kilometers traveled to the conference.

Once again UA ASME has been competitive at the ASME Student Conference. The 2006 District F Student Conference was held in Tampa, FL, April 6-8, 2006.

  • Stanford Ballard and Todd Mink won first place in the 'Sip'n'puff' Design Competition. They will represent the District at IMECE in Chicago later this year.
  • John Saucier and Jason Edwards placed third in the Design Competition.
  • Vladimir 'Frank' Nitriansky placed fourth in the Old Guard Oral Presenetation with "Phoenix II."
  • Sadie Cole won first place in the Old Guard Webposter Competition with her BAMASAT entry.
  • UA also again finished first in the Ingersoll-Rand Competition for most active ASME chapters with a perfect score.
  • We also received the Kilometer Award for the most student-kilometers traveled to the conference.

Section president Matt Fitzgerald was named to the 2006 USA Today All Academic Team. Matt joins Mechanical Engineering alumni Tanya Cole Andrews (’99), Stephanie Horne Swindle (’00), and Thomas Bailey Davis Lee (’02) as the fourth ME student to receive this singular honor.

Our section has been very successful in competitions at both the regional and national level. This year at the Region XI RSC, the UA Student Section had a team or individual to place in each of the competitions that were offered.

We had one team enter the 2005 ASME Human Powered Vehicle East Coast Contest held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Our team finished third in the tandem vehicle class.

We have a strong presence on campus, and recently were rewarded at the 19th Annual Coordinating Council of Student Organizations Awards Banquet.

As for Ingersoll-Rand points, we are proud to say that we have had a perfect baseline score for the past three years. We were also the recepient of the ASME Little Giant Award in 2002-2003.

Our officers and members are among the best and brighest students in the college.

The Capstone Engineering Society Senior of the Year has been an ASME officer for the last two years - this year's Receipeint was Ashley Erickson, past VP of Programs.

The Alabama Society of Professional Engineers Student Engineer of the Year has also been an ASME member for the past two years - this year's recipient was Thomas Saunders, past Section President.

Our members are active outside of the discipline also - our past VP of Membership and current Treasurer Lisa Vaughn was the 2004 recipient of the Penny Allen Award.
